Product Experience
Product Experience Intelligence
How good is a brand's product experience really – compared to the competition, across all channels, and over all six quality dimensions? Product Experience Intelligence (PXI) is the methodical approach with which Y1 answers this question precisely and based on data. More than 700 European brands in 40 segments have already been analyzed according to this framework.
PXI is not a one-off measurement, but a continuous management tool: it makes the quality of the product experience visible, comparable, and optimizable.
What is Product Experience Intelligence?
Definition
Product Experience Intelligence refers to the systematic measurement, analysis, and interpretation of the quality of product experiences across all channels and touchpoints – based on a structured evaluation framework and compared against the market and competition.
PXI answers specific strategic questions:
Where does our brand stand on the digital shelf compared to the segment?
Which dimensions of the product experience are our strengths – and which are our biggest levers?
How large is our owned-vs.-retail-gap, and where do we lose quality on third-party channels?
What are the segment leaders doing differently – and what can we adopt?
Differentiation from Classical Content Audits
A classical content audit analyzes what is present – whether images are missing, descriptions are too short, or attributes have not been filled. PXI goes a decisive step further: it evaluates how well the content addresses customer needs and purchase decisions. Completeness is necessary, but not sufficient. PXI measures experience quality, not just data completeness.
The Y1 PXM Maturity Framework
Six Evaluation Dimensions
Y1 evaluates the product experience along six dimensions (D1–D6), which together provide the complete picture of a brand's PXM maturity:
D1 – Strategy & Governance: Product systemics, consistency of terminology, cross-touchpoint management
D2 – Customer Value & Benefit Messaging: Feature-to-benefit translation, target group addressing, benefit logic
D3 – Channel & Retail Content: Completeness on retailers, channel adaptation, content variance
D4 – Product Data & Attributes: Data structure, comparability, attribute consistency
D5 – Content Assets & Visual: Content modules, visual consistency, content quality
D6 – Digital Maturity & Technology: Structured data, page performance, content recency, AI signals
Each dimension is rated on a scale of 0–5. The PXM Score is the weighted overall value across all six dimensions.
Evidence Indicators (EI)
Each dimension is operationalized through specific Evidence Indicators – a total of 26 indicators evaluated based on publicly accessible signals. Each indicator receives a grade (0–3), which is factored into the dimension score.
This approach makes the evaluation transparent, reproducible, and comparable – across segments, channels, and time periods.
Application Areas of PXI
Competitive Benchmarking
PXI enables direct comparison with segment leaders and immediate competitors. Not based on gut feeling, but based on structured scores: What is the gap to the market leader? Which specific dimension separates us?
Gap Analysis Owned vs. Retail
Many brands invest heavily in their own website – and lose quality on retail channels. PXI makes this gap visible and quantifies it: on average in the European market, the owned-vs.-retail-gap in many segments is 0.2–0.5 points. In some segments, it exceeds 0.6 points – with direct impacts on conversion and visibility.
Maturity Tracking Over Time
PXI scans are performed quarterly or annually. This enables progress measurement: Have the content investments of recent months measurably improved the D2 scores? Is the retail gap closing?
Segment and Vertical Analysis
For brands with a broad assortment across multiple segments, PXI provides structural insights into where the greatest quality differences lie between product categories – and where investments should be prioritized.
PXM Maturity Study: The European Benchmark
Scope
The Y1 PXM Maturity Study is the most comprehensive structured assessment of product experience in Europe. It comprises:
Over 700 brands analyzed
40 segments in 9 verticals
Industries: Consumer Electronics, Sport & Outdoor, Home & Living, Fashion & Luxury, Health & Wellness, Food & Beverage, Building & DIY, and more
Key Findings
The study shows: the European market average lies at around 3.3 out of 5.0 points. D6 (Digital Maturity & Technology) is the weakest dimension – very few brands consistently leverage structured data, AI signals, or temporally synchronized content updates. D2 (Benefit Messaging) is often the largest differentiating lever: those who communicate customer benefits clearly consistently achieve above-average overall scores.
Access for Brands
Brands wishing to determine their own positioning within the Y1 PXM Maturity Framework can request an individual scan – providing a concrete score, segment benchmark, and prioritized action recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions about Product Experience Intelligence
What is Product Experience Intelligence?
Product Experience Intelligence (PXI) is the systematic, data-driven measurement of the quality of product experiences across all channels – based on a structured evaluation framework and compared against the market and competition.
How does PXI differ from a content audit?
A content audit checks the completeness and availability of content. PXI further evaluates the experience quality: How well does the content convince buyers? How consistent is the brand across channels? How large is the quality loss on retail channels?
What data sources does PXI use?
PXI analyses are based on publicly accessible signals: product detail pages on owned channels, retailer listings (Amazon, MediaMarkt, etc.), structured data (Schema.org), page performance metrics, and content recency signals.
How often should a PXI analysis be performed?
Y1 recommends at least annual full scans for a complete benchmark picture, as well as quarterly spot-checks for critical channels and highly competitive product categories.
What is the result of a PXI scan?
The result is a structured report with an overall score, dimension scores (D1–D6), segment benchmark, identification of strengths and weaknesses, as well as prioritized recommendations for action.
Can PXI be used for AI optimization (GEO)?
Yes. D6 (Digital Maturity) explicitly includes AI-relevant signals – structured data, content recency, technical quality indicators. A high D6 score correlates with better visibility in AI-assisted search environments.
